Mums in Business – Claire Fisher

What better day than International Women’s Day to introduce our new feature on Worthing Mums: Mums in Business.

We are all surrounded by inspirational women, mums, who are running their own businesses and rock at it! This feature is dedicated to those ladies to help and support local mums in business. First up is Claire Fisher from Harmony at Home Children’s Boutique…

Tell us about you and your family

I am a mum of two boys, aged 10 and 12.

Are you originally from Worthing?

I moved to Worthing with my husband about 14 years ago. I was born in South London and we knew we didn’t want to bring up our family in London.  We started talking about the South Coast and really found Worthing by accident.  I started working in Brighton but like many people knew we couldn’t afford to buy a family house there. It was difficult to start with not knowing anyone in the area, but since having the children we have met so many people and discovered what an amazing place Worthing is.  Then a couple of years ago my parents also moved down to Worthing from London which has been fantastic.  I definitely couldn’t have even considered opening a shop without their support. 14 years, and 2 children later, we now wouldn’t think about living anywhere else.

What’s your favourite thing about living on the South Coast?

We love that Worthing is such a family friendly town, that we have such great facilities and also have the beauty of the Downs and the Beach.

Hobbies? What do you do in your spare time?

Running a business and having two active boys doesn’t really leave us with much spare time but we love to eat out when we can and our beloved Border Collie Max adores the beach come rain or shine!

Tell us about your business, why you started and what drives you on?

Running a business has been an enormous challenge for me as I’ve never done anything like this before, in-fact I’d never even worked in a shop! I took on the business 2 years ago when the shop was located in Lindfield near Haywards Heath. I have always found that there is a very limited choice in Worthing for good quality children’s clothes, toys and gifts – that something a little bit different that you aren’t going to find on every high street. So when the opportunity arose to move the shop to Worthing I jumped at the chance.

We then opened our doors in Warwick Street in January 2017 which meant that Christmas was pretty chaotic but it’s been worth all the hard work and it feels amazing to now be part of the Worthing business community; and people have been really supportive.

“…good quality children’s toys that aren’t plastic…”

I am passionate about the products we sell with a desire to offer good quality children’s toys that aren’t plastic and clothes that aren’t going to turn a completely different shape the first time you wash them. Another area that really drives me is customer service, it still amazes me how little customer care there is in many large chain stores. I also know how difficult it is to shop with young children and our play table is a welcome distraction for little ones to make shopping a little easier.
