Are you ready for another inspiring mum in business?
Meet Kerry who runs Wannado Streetdance. I have witnessed her and the kids from her dance teams’ dancing moves first hand at the Tot Rockin’ Beats events, and let me tell you, they are amazing and look like a heap of fun! Over to Kerry…
Tell us about you and your family
I am a very energetic, competitive person, with a strong work ethic that I got from my Dad. I’m also very nurturing, outgoing with a quirky nutty side like my Mum. I love all things creative, physically challenging, and am very passionate about positive connections with people. I have a wonderful fiance, also a new business owner, who pushes me to be my best self. We have a beautiful little daughter called Red, who unlike her Mummy, would prefer to do ballet in a princess dress than Hip Hop around in a comfy pair of trackies!
Are you originally from Worthing?
No. I was born in High Wycombe, and my primary school life was spent moving between grandparents and parents after their divorce. I moved in and around London, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. We settled with my Dad in Littlehampton when I was 11, with the hope of moving closer to Brighton at some point. I bought my first Flat in Worthing with my little family, and I am proud to call this up and coming town my home.
Beach or South Downs?
Beach. If it wasn’t for my obsessive working nature or my toddler, I would be a sun goddess every day!
Tell us an unusual fact about yourself.
I am really good at handstands.
If you could spend the day with any celebrity or historical figure, who would it be?
Richard Branson. He is a business mastermind and I wouldn’t mind some of his advice!
Finally, tell us about your business, why you started and what drives you on?
I have had many hobbies over the years, around my professional training, in competitive sports, circus, dance and theatre, and always followed opportunities that presented themselves from these. I have taught children during and ever since my Uni days (where I completed a BA Honours in Theatre Arts), but I got to the stage where I was teaching so many different things, I wanted to master one skill, and focus on building on that. I got a Distinction in the only government accredited Authentic Streetdance course and knew that I wanted to build my career around this empowering, expressive and community-based culture. When my beautiful daughter surprised her way into our lives, in order to continue to do what I love, remain creative and make a living for my new family, I needed to get serious in building a business model that was sustainable.
My heart will always be in my craft and my love of teaching, connecting with students and harnessing their growth and potential, but my family drives me to make a reputable business out of my passion and craft. I am very excited about the skills I am always learning and I can not wait for what the future holds, and yet I love what the present gives as well.
