We are all surrounded by inspirational women, mums, who are running their own businesses and rock at it! This feature is dedicated to those ladies to help and support local mums in business. Today, let’s meet Lysanne Skinner who runs Worthing Sling Library…

Tell us about you and your family

Neil and I got married on Worthing Pier in October 2015, our son Dexter arrived in May 2016, we started babywearing 2 weeks after he was born.

Are you originally from Worthing?

I was originally born in Holland, moved to Hertfordshire when I was 2, moved to Brighton when I was 23, moved to Worthing when I was 30!

What’s your favourite thing about living on the South Coast?

I adore living by the sea.  We’ve always had family who live near Brighton and so my summers growing up were spent down here.  To me it’s freedom, happiness, sun, sea… and that smell!  The smell of the sea just makes me happy.  I love taking Dexter for walks along the seafront in a sling.

Hobbies? What do you do in your spare time?

My spare time is spent playing video games (Nintendo mainly, especially Pokemon), cooking and baking (I recently made a seven tier rainbow unicorn birthday drip cake for my two year old niece), running (I did the Brighton marathon in 2015) and going out with my family and friends.

Tell us about your business, why you started and what drives you on?

I was a secondary school drama teacher for 8 years before Dexter came along.  My school was 30 miles away from Worthing and we made the decision that I wouldn’t go back to that school but if I wanted to go back to teaching I would find a job down here.

Then Dexter was born and we discovered the joys of baby wearing through the Sling Library.

When breastfeeding failed and PND set in, it was babywearing that kept me sane.

When breastfeeding failed and PND set in, it was babywearing that kept me sane.  The oxytocin release I never got from breastfeeding was found when he was on me.  It helped us bond.  It kept my anxiety in check.  I was a nervous wreck when he was in the pram, but as soon as I wore him, we both relaxed.  He is the happiest most content baby, and babywearing solves so many daily problems such as shopping, cooking, eating and just getting out.

When the previous owner announced she was selling, I knew instinctively it was the right business for me.  I had fallen out of love with teaching and I wanted to start a business but I didn’t know what I wanted to do.  This spoke to me.  I wanted to help other parents who like me were tired, stressed or overwhelmed and wanted a solution.  I wanted to help parents with more than one child regain some control.  Most of all, I wanted to give parents freedom.

The magic moment for me, and a lot of other consultants, is that moment when a parent first tries on a sling or carrier, pops their baby into it and that shot of oxytocin is released.  You can actually see them relax and within minutes baby is usually asleep as a result.  It is a magical moment that I feel so privileged to facilitate.

I adore this business and I am so thankful that I get to help parents find new ways of bonding, communicating and feeding their little ones.
