Welcome back to another issue of Mums in Business with Monika who runs Worthing Therapies, helping many different age groups, from children to the elderly, combat stress, anxiety and even infertility as a Clinical & Therapeutic Reflexologist.
Tell us about you and your family
My daughter Natalie and I came to the UK in 2005. I met my husband John here and my son Jack was born a few years later. Natalie is now at college studying childcare. Jack is a brilliant defender with a magical right foot. Recently we have moved from Tarring Road to Goring. We love our little house with a beautiful garden where I try to spend most of my free time. We all love to cycle and don’t want to own a car (well apart from Nat! typical teenager…).
Are you originally from Worthing?
No, I am originally from Poland, from a little town called Malbork with the biggest medieval castle in the world. When I came here in 2005, I lived in Bognor Regis for a month, until moving to Worthing with my now husband and his mum.
Beach or Southdowns?
This is a tough one. I love to cycle so love going to the South Downs but the beach has something that always calms me down, keeps me grounded.
Tell us an unusual fact about yourself.
I secretly believe in fairies and was in a punk band when I was younger.
If you could spend the day with any celebrity or historical figure, who would it be?
It has to be David Bowie.
Finally, tell us about your business, why you started and what drives you on?
A few years ago, prolonged stress caused tinnitus in both my ears, this, in turn, contributed to my depression and anxiety. Working for years in a care environment and seeing side effects of antidepressants, I refused to take a single one. Instead, I turned to holistic therapies. I started qigong and yoga; I looked into diet and supplements and started practising hypnotherapy and meditation.
I came across reflexology and being very impulsive and driven, I decided to learn it and be my own boss. I signed up and was accepted to the only reflexology school in Sussex that trained their students to the highest level in the UK (Level 5). After an intensive year of studies, I became a Clinical and Therapeutic Reflexologist. Because of my past experience, I now specialise in stress-related conditions and female health.
I also write a blog relating to these issues. Having a BA(Hons) in psychology was a real bonus for helping my clients. I see a very wide range of clients, from elderly, palliative, pregnant mums, to middle-aged, younger and even children.
Being a mum I have realised how school, peer pressure and simple hormonal changes can cause stress to our children. I came up with the idea of workshops for parents, to enable them to help their children to relax before sleep, after school and to help with any anxieties. Parents and children learn to give each other reflexology and strengthen the bond between them but most of all to have fun.
I also offer reflexology workshops for couples in order to help them with fertility. Stress can cause problems with fertility and reflexology is great in helping combat it and bringing the body to its lost balance.
My business helped me to finally become more independent, to have more time with my family and doing what I love.
Monika moved to Worthing in 2005. In 2016 she qualified as a reflexologist and cut down on her hours in a care home to start her own business.
